Why Does a Winter Lockdown Feel So Much Harder?

Winter alone is hard to get through but having a winter lockdown feels like life is impossible. Having had both a summer and winter lockdown, let us address why the winter is more challenging.

Winter Weather

We all remember the only good thing about lockdown 2020 was the glorious summer weather. The UK had never seen anything like it. Fast forward to winter, and the world seems duller. The thought of exercising in the rain and cold is demotivating in itself. It’s cold in the morning, so it is harder to get out of bed. Life in winter is a lot harder without being stuck in your house at the same time.

Lack of Daylight

The long nights and shorter days can impact your energy levels. Waking up in the dark and finishing work in the dark for months doesn’t fill anyone with excitement. This can make a winter lockdown feel even longer as you already feel low. So it is normal to feel sluggish all day and have little energy for anything, and that is with the ability to leave your house.

Lack of Motivation

Closely linked to the lack of daylight is low motivation levels. Having very little light, particularly in the morning, means people have no ‘get up and go’ feeling. On the other hand, the 2020 lockdown sun helped us jump out of bed and sit in the garden all day. Whereas the winter lockdown weather is dark until 8 am and only lets you outside for five minutes before you’re shivering.

Unwilling to Exercise

Exercise levels also drop as no one feels the urge to run in the rain as much as they would in the sun. But, you are not alone in feeling these effects. Two-thirds of adults struggle to partake in any form of physical activity during the winter months.

It doesn’t help that the winter lockdown was the third one to happen in less than a year, so naturally, people are fatigued by the whole thing. It is okay not to have the energy to do something you were once able to. You won’t be the only one feeling this way, I promise. We are here to give whatever support you need. Don’t let the effects of a winter lockdown have lasting effects on you. This is your time to shine.
