What Does PTSD Mean?

What does PTSD mean? A question that can have many different answers depending on who you ask. Scientists describe PTSD as a mental illness as a result of experiencing a traumatic event. However, some people can describes PTSD as an excuse to be stuck in the past, refusing to move on from trauma.

Origins of PTSD

PTSD has been called many different things throughout time, for example, shell shock and combat fatigue. These have led to the general public thinking that PTSD is exclusive to veterans. This way of thinking isn’t accurate. Every person will experience the feelings of fear and panic that PTSD manifests. It is just the case that most people will recover from these feelings while a minority will develop PTSD.

What Does PTSD Mean in Terms of Symptoms?

To be diagnosed with PTSD, you must have been experiencing these symptoms for over one month.

· Flashbacks

· Nightmares

· Unusual and scary thoughts

· Avoiding places and feelings that remind you of the experience

· Being startled easily

· Feeling on edge or tense

· Having unexpected anger outbursts

· Negative thoughts

· Loss of interest in hobbies

Can Children Have PTSD?

Yes. Infants, children, teenagers, and young adults can all suffer. However, their symptoms may be different from adults. Their ability to continue to deal with everyday life ,while suffering from PTSD, can also be drastically different from adults. Other symptoms can include:

· Disruptive behaviour

· Thoughts of revenge

· Bedwetting

· Becoming mute

· Role-playing the event during game times

The treatment for younger people suffering is more tailored to help the child understand what they have experienced.

What Does PTSD Mean For Recovery?

It is debatable whether PTSD is something that can be cured and recovered from. Despite this, certain things can help a person to limit the effects that PTSD has on their life. These can include:

· Asking for support and comfort from those around them

· Finding and attending a support group

· Developing a positive coping strategy

· Learning about their condition

· Accepting what happened to them
